Men, Sports And My Ever Ballooning Cable Bill

Men, Sports And My Ever Ballooning Cable Bill

The cable bill was $248.00 this month.  You read that right and Im none too happy about it.  Why so high you ask?  My darling husband decided to order some MLB special (read: Baseball) and the last Pay Paper View fight between Pacquiao and Hatton.

I promise you, I only need my channels and CNN, everything else I can grab online or through iTunes.  That’s it!  But we have HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, NBA League Pass and a host of other junk channels that I don’t watch.  Lately it’s been ESPN central around here with the baseball and basketball folks getting started on their seasons and playoffs-and well, Im over it.  I just didn’t expect the cable bill to be so darn high!

What to do what to do….

I signed him up for the DC Boxing Fans meetup which meets at a rotating member’s home for each fight night.  They all split the bill so it ends up being really cheap for everyone.

Here’s the Meetup description:

Welcome, Washington Boxing Fans!

Get together to watch HBO/Showtime boxing on television with huge fans just like you!

I almost never watch the great boxing matches on PPV… they just cost too much. So what better solution that to get a bunch of huge boxing fans together to enjoy the fight and split the bill?

The math is simple… if we gather 5-8 boxing fans, each of us will pay no more than $10.00 a fight!

Meetups will rotate through members homes, especially those with large screen, HD televisions… :)

Please, join the group and let me know if you’d be able to host an event at your place.

Here’s my message to the organizer on why we want to join:

Ginger

“My husband is an avid boxing fan and wants to join others in their love for the sport while reducing our cable bill.”

Simple huh?  Im an avid fan of Meetup.com for obvious reasons for situations like these when you have an expensive hobby (im my husband’s case, boxing) it’s time to split the cost with other like-minded folks.  Let’s hope this makes a significant dent on our bill because Im ready to call Verizon Fios and do a triple play with them but shhhh you didnt read that here!

Great post! Really good insight. It's always difficult to discuss finances and share money in relationships. Thanks for your advice. I recently stumbled upon this blog like I stumbled upon yours. I think they offer some good points and laughter about the topic: http://burisonthecouch.wordpress.com/2010/09/22/d…

Thanks for the post! I'd like to see more like it.

The only reason we even have satellite is so that my husband can watch NFL network and ESPN. We signed up for MLB TV online (it cost us $109 for the entire season), and now he can watch the games on his laptop. We don't do any premium movie channels; Netflix works just fine for us. Good luck!

Are you in Washington state or Washington DC?

We usually watch WWE stuff, but Tim might be interested in some PPV events on some things. I can't believe the bill added up that quickly. Man that's awful! I think if most people compared their usage with what they pay for, they'd be pretty upset! My in-laws pay for premium movie channels. But i've yet to see them watch anything on it.

Don't forget that some bars will also broadcast PPV events. So that might be a good way to get relatively free events.
