With Obama’s recent visit to the Cleveland clinic, who will cease hiring smokers as of September 1, the Today Show is speculating that this may become a corporate health care trend. Here’s the message from Dr Delos Cosgrove, CEO and President at the Cleveland Clinic: While we are on the topic of smoking, I understand that there are differences of opinion about our recently announced policy to stop hiring smokers as of September 1st. Many people have told me that they totally agree with the idea. I have also seen and heard comments that what we are doing is discriminatory….Some ... Read More »

Squeaking By On $300,000: Washington Post Express
I guess some of my more snarkier commentary was picked up by the Washington Post Express on the Squeaking by on $300,000: Recession Fallout in Six Figures article: *snicker* What can I say? There are people with larger problems, Ms Steins worrying about squeaking by on $300,000 just sounds silly when she has within her means to scale back and save more. Read More »
$15,000 Home Buyer Tax Credit Possible For All Buyers
As you probably know the original $8,000 Home Buyer tax credit only applied to first time home buyers and capped the income of those eligible to purchase a new home using the $8,000 credit. The House (H.R. 1245) and Senate (S.1230) have presented the following (CBS NEWS): Increase the first-time home buyer tax credit from $8,000 to $15,000; Expand the tax credit’s eligibility to apply to any buyer; Eliminate the $75,000/$150,000 income cap; Extend the tax credit for one year from the date of enactment. This would be an awesome deal if they expanded the credit in this manner. I ... Read More »
MilkShake Money: Let’s Hope Nas Brought His Wallet To The Yard
Kelis and her lawyers have made the following determination, you know, since Nas makes considerably more moolah than Kelis: – Nas pulls in $244,826 a month – Kelis rakes in a relatively paltry $13,744 a month – Kelis should get child support totaling $17,225 a month – Kelis should get spousal support totaling $72,728 – Nas should pay retro child support totaling $29,522 – Nas should pay retro spousal support totaling $281,571 Wow! I guess her milkshake did bring all the boys to the yard! What say you? Is Kelis entitled to more child and spousal support? Last month, a ... Read More »
Check His Credit: The Fallout And My Response
Earlier this week the post, Reason #423 Why You Should Check His Credit went live on this site. What followed was angry commentary from men who were no less than PISSED that I advocate that a women be financially knowledgeable about a man’s finances before saying I DO. First, let me clear a few things up about this blog: This blog is obviously written by a woman, and that would be me, Ginger. It is written by a woman for women on the topics of personal finance and everything that goes along with it. Why? I find that women are often ... Read More »
Read This: Unemployment + Bad Credit = No Job
Yes you read right! If you are unemployed and have bad credit then you have another hurdle to get past: employers unwilling to higher you because of bad credit. It’s important to note that this is the kind of bad credit where the potential employee has shown reckless irresponsibility with their financial life thus making the employer unwilling to trust them with sensitive information. Here in DC, that also means losing a security clearance-even after you’ve received it. More on that later. The NY Times article discusses the new trend: Once reserved for government jobs or payroll positions that could involve significant ... Read More »
Reason #423 Why You Should Check His Credit
This is so unfortunate but it speaks to my thoughts around checking your mate’s credit and not totally giving up the financial reigns in a relationship. I can relate to being consumed with wedding expenses and planning and maybe even being tempted to skip a few bills but at what cost? Check the video to find out! I think they can work past it, but this involves such a sense of betrayal for this woman, to have her car repossessed on her wedding day has gotta hurt! What would you do in their situation? Squeaking by on $300,000: Recession Fallout in Six Figures
Imagine reading your Sunday newspaper, in my case, the Washington Post where the requisite financial stories abound discussing the recession and families scaling back etc and then screeching at this headline: Squeaking by on $300,000: Recession Fallout in Six Figures Now, like many of you, the sarcasm dripped as I read through the article thinking to myself, how crazy this woman is for even stating that she was squeaking by on 300k. Here were the responses on Twitter: JenBreedlove: ok seriously, squeaking by on 300K? give me a fracking break. stop complaining you still have your kids, your health and your ... Read More »
Borrowers vs. Savers: Who Wins?
photo credit: Mariano Kamp Borrowers may seem like the victims in the recent financial crisis, but low interest rates and higher FDIC premiums mean savers are paying for it. Based on all the news of mortgage foreclosures and credit card defaults, you might think this is an especially tough time to be a borrower. Indeed, lending standards have gotten tougher, and many people have seen their credit card rates skyrocket. Still, the people I feel sorry for are not the borrowers, but the savers. Let’s say you are one of the millions of Americans who do the right things with ... Read More »
