Depends, I trailed my DH to new england. I have a great school but it's not the same. I made a deal however, and I will stick to my deal of leaving him if he wants to stay in the area. I am not living here forever, even with him. Deal breaker. So what will happen? This year we'll see.

I think both careers are equally important! It depends of each individual… in your case, you both love your jobs! The choices are difficult in this situation. Listen and communicate to each other what is most important and compromise on what you are able to let go for the sake of the happiness of your spouse. With that in mind you will be able to find a solution!

I think it depends on the couple's goals. If you are planning on living together or starting a family together, then money – i.e. desired lifestyle – needs to be a primary point of discussion and consideration. If one spouse works full time making 6 figures and the other spouse works part time making $20,000, then obviously the higher earning one deserves more consideration. Not only because it's the one supporting the couple/family, but also because it's easier to replace a part time $20K income than it is to find the other spouse another six figure opportunity.

On the other hand if the 6 figure earning spouse is considering a promotion where s/he'll be traveling a lot or otherwise seriously impacting the family's lifestyle (i.e. running for political office), then both partners should have more of an equal voice and vote.
