Dominican Hair Care Rates: NY vs DC

[ Aside: Feel free to skip this post as it isn't personal finance related so much as it is my ranting about the price differences between Dominican hair care in NY and DC]

If  you’re a woman with textured hair then you know that Dominican Salons are the best thing when it comes to healthy, straight and shiny hair while on a budget.  This picture says it all:

Need I say more?

While in NYC this weekend I realized how much I miss this aspect of the city.  Being able to walk up the street and get a wash and set for $20 and walk out with shiny, bouncy hair.

DC?  Different Story.  I’ve seen the same service for $75+, yes a relaxer with a deep conditioner at a Dominican Salon in DC can cost that much.

What’s the difference you ask?  Nothing.  NYC is home to all things related to Dominican hair care.  They perfected the art of the roller set and blow out.  They use their own products straight from the Dominican Republic in many cases and lines start to form outside on a Saturday morning starting around 7am.

It’s that serious.

I’m not sure what’s up with the salons here in DC but I’m over them starting yesterday.

On the upside I did find an Ethiopian Salon which is an Aveda Concept Salon which boasts the same, if not better results than a Dominican salon so I’m game.  I’ll stopping by there this week to take a looksee and see how their technique fairs against the new Aveda Concept salon.

Maybe I’ll share pictures.

Toodles.

    I agree!

Check out Judy Dominican Hair Salon in Adams Morgan she charges 35 for long hair….She is pretty good actually. Better than the shops I visited in Silver Spring…Please post the information about the Ethiopian Salon!

    It will be much appreciated!

Good Luck, Ginger. I was so hopeful a couple months ago that the Dominicans could straighten my un-relaxed hair without chemicals…and while the deep conditioner was LIKE THAT (even though it was months ago i think I’m still feeling the remnants of that conditioner), the style and overall service was kinda bad.

    Let us know! :)

well i have had a whole different experience in N.y .Dominican salons When ever i go to a salon in N.y .my hair is never styled they seem to do that same look straight down with a slight bend at the end or a bob i mean come on and this has been since the 80s far as D.c. i would choose the D.c. salon only BECOUSE in D.c. they style your hair waaaaay better than N.y. salon . And far as the prices in D.c being 70and up! i don't know what salon she has been going to thats charging her 70-75 dollars ??? that is crazy!! i only pay 25 to 45 at the most and if i do pay 45$ dollar its becouse i am getting my hair trimmed . Don' t get me WRONG YOU WILL GET A MEAN BLOW OUT IN NY BUT I WOULD NOT SAY THE SALON ARE ALL THAT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE I MEAN NY IS A WAY BIGGER CITY THAN DC AND ITS A LOT MORE DOMINICAN SALONS IN NY THAN IT IS IN THE DC LIKE I SAID BEFORE NY DOMINICAN SALONS YOU CANT GO WRONG IN MOST OF THEM YOU WILL HAVE NICE SILKY HAIR AND I' AM SURE YOU RECEIVE THAT SAME BOB LOOK OR JUST STR8GHT LOOK .
