For me, conversations about salary/finances have never been comfortable, but are necessary! I didn't start initiating salary negotiations until a few years ago (well into my late 20's!) and what a difference it made. This tip in particular, resonates with me: "Your employer won’t have enough confidence in you to give you a raise with more responsibility if you aren’t perceived as someone who can advocate for themselves." How very true. If we don't believe in ourselves, why should anyone else... and esp. a potential/current employer? This is such an important article, and I’m glad you posted it! I read your site all the time but never comment. I can't imagine not going after the salary I want. I didn't think I was getting my worth(are you ever when you work for someone else?) So I went to our rep and explained why I wanted more money(I'm doing more than my job description states) I had notes on exactly what extra I had been doing, how it impacted my day etc. She says to me well I don't know then proceeds to tell me about the year after 9/11 no one got received a raise or bonus. I looked at her and said that was nice and all but we are 7 years removed and what does that have to do with me. I told her I wanted 15k more and she told me they couldn't do it. I said fine and walked out of her office. She had her assistant come to my desk and ask me if that was it and if I was going to look for other employment etc. Long story short the rep went to my immeadiate boss and he told her to give me the money. Her trying to be Billy Bad Azz only offered me 13k more. But I think that most people would have just said ok but like you said my mom is a go getter and I'm just like here and I wasn't going to just sit there without a fight. Heck I think I deserve a heck of a lot more. I tell all my friends go in there with a game plan and don't back down.YOU deserve this! Hi Ginger. I read your site all the time but never comment.
