I have found being a graphic designer (as an independent contractor, I guess I’m an entrepreneur even though I mostly work in office at advertising agencies) pretty darn profitable over the years. As a freelancer it can offer flexibility, too - if you don’t mind prolonged agonizing stints of all nighters and mild deadline-induced psychosis. Still pretty male-dominated, though changing.

Thanks for sharing the article. I would also like to add that having a career in information technology is also a lucrative field for women to earn big bucks, not to mention have a spiffy work title =D

Great stuff - I know psychologists rake it in, though apparently it’s quite a competitive field.

I love the Entrepreneur suggestion, even though it’s a bit vague. Being an internet entrepreneur is especially appealing - it really levels the playing field in my opinion.

Haha, I’ve considered 4 of these careers and am currently pursuing 2!

I was a phych (and philosophy) major in college, all ready to be a counseling psychologist. But by late junior year I wasn’t ready to commit the next 8 years of my life to getting a MA, PhD, and training before I could even start practicing.

So I switched to finance and went into wealth management, now banking. I’ve been planning to get my CFP for some time, and one day I may just be a self-employed “financial planner” especially if I have kids and want to set my own hours.

I also just started a real estate investing company this year, which I plan to focus on once I’m not inthe corporate world - blogging is kind of entreprenurial as well, which I’m getting pretty addicted to.

And my back up plan has always been to be a teacher! It’s the perfect job if you love it and want to work but want to have children (and not have a nanny).

Salaries seem low. Most psychologist I know make more than $80,000. Now days it is hard to make it on less than $6000 a month unless you want to work forever.

Well I’m in HR now.. on the fast road to be a HR Manager in a few years.. I’m already an entrepreneur I just need to “expand” my business. Guess I’m on the right road huh. Good post

Becoming an entrepreneur is definitely an appealing long term goal I plan to pursue. I feel that helping others is one of my life’s purposes. I also can see myself having several career paths over my lifetime (author, communications specialist, non-profit manager, motivational speaker, grant writer…I could go on). Women of any age should not limit their dreams. As Nas the rapper says: “The world is yours,” you just have to believe it.
