A Set Back is a Set Up for a Come Back

How many times has this happened to you? You make a decision to change your ways, set on a new path and something comes along to knock you off track. What do you do? Do you go back to old ways because they’re comfortable? Or do you revert to plan B?

What’s your plan?

There will always be set backs. In fact, plan for them. Why? Because it means there’s something awesome on the other end of the challenge. I know this is starting to sound more like personal development but maybe that isn’t so bad. After all, when we learn to move past life’s set backs we take important lessons from the event. We learn to persevere and adapt to any situation that life may throw at is.

How do you come back? Why would you want to when you’ve been knocked down so many times? I’ll show you how.

Write it down.

Write down everything that happened. As you’re doing this you will begin to visualize the events as they unfolded and garner important lessons from this exercise for your next step. After writing it down, reviewing the events and hopefully seeing things in a new light, write down your goals for the next step.

Will you create a more specific budget? Save aggressively to rebuild the emergency fund? Identify at least 5 new job search portals and send out 20 resumes a day? Write it down.

Be specific and make objectives while doing this. Giving yourself objectives adds dimension to the goal by giving you precise means as to how you will achieve this goal.

Develop a Time line

When do you plan to get out of this rut? Don’t wait around for opportunity to sit in your lap. It won’t. Be active in our success and give it a deadline. This goes for personal finance and other areas of life.

Challenge Yourself

What didn’t work the last time around? Are you prepared to try something you’ve never tried before? What’s stopping you? Do you need to save adequately for emergencies? Do you need to save more and perhaps become frugal in other areas?

Challenge yourself to do more and you’ll see better results.

Accept the Consequence

A good friend told me once that he lets a set back get the best of him for one day. One day. Once the sun rises on the second day its time to get up and make moves. As simple as it sounds, that’s worked for me over the years.

Most recently I messed up royally. I faced some serious consequences but for that day when I got the news I cried, got angry and let it all hang out. Towards the end of the night I accepted whatever consequences that were to come. After all what’s done is done. I made alternate plans should the worst happen and kept it moving. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want the worst to happen but I was prepared.

My personality is as such where I’ve been through way too much to be sad and depressed about something I can’t help. Everything turned out fine but it was a lesson I was prepared to learn and pay serious consequences. Let’s just say Lord smiled on me recently.

So take some time to think about how you respond to life’s set backs. Do you just sit and take it or will you get back up and try again? Try again. Keep at it until you get it right. There’s no glory in trying, only success. Make a plan, stick to it and be prepared for any set backs that come along the way. It’s never permanent because a set back is a set up for a come back.

How have you bounced back from previous setbacks?
